At NIPEX 2018, Nigeria printers condemn printing of election materials abroad

By Eniola Daniel
National President, Printing, Publishing and Paper Products Workers (NUPPPPROW), Comrade John Ushie, has called on the Federal Government to consider giving the jobs of printing election materials and other paper works to indigenous operators.
NIPEX 2018
Ushie said this move will boast the Nigerian economy and reduce the rate of unemployment in the country. He made the call at the ongoing Nigeria International Print Expo at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos with the theme; Print Business: Innovation & Profitability.
According to him, “Printing of ballot papers and other election materials outside Nigeria is totally condemnable. We condemn it in its entirety: there is no way we can have a country like Nigeria where we have capable hands but rather snub them and take the job of printing outside the country. We have the capacity, and that's why we are advocating that for those who are coming up must be empowered. The irony of it is that only small amount is taxed on materials printed outside the country and more taxes on printing materials imported into the country
On innovations in the print industry, he said, “today, printing is easier. We could sit by our system,  process our work and send them for printing. Our major challenge in this part of the world is finance: we want this profession to move forward that is why we are meeting with all the stakeholders and we are happy that the Bank of Industry (BOI) has come in and with the effort of the organiser of this

Hope For PIB Passage Dashed As Buhari Withholds Assent To 17-Year Old Bill

• Says PIGB shrinks presidential powers over oil sector
• Experts differ on legislation, OPEC membership
President Muhammadu Buhari has withheld assent to the Petroleum Industrial Governance Bill (PIGB). The decision is coming after 17 years of rigorous consultations and legislative hassles on the document.
Sources told The Guardian yesterday that Buhari hinged his action on the argument that the bill reduces the president’s control of an industry that contributes the largest chunk to the national economy.
“The president said those he contacted among his ministers, especially the attorney general and minister of justice, claimed that presidential powers have been passed to a technocrat who might undermine the interest of the president.”
In the works for almost two decades, the PIGB has passed through both the House of Representatives and the Senate. In its torturous journey to the president’s table, contributions were taken from industry operators, oil-bearing communities, and all levels of government.
The bill was particularly being championed by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, who described it as the solution to the problems bedeviling the nation’s oil industry.
Originally called Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) when it was presented, it was whittled down to accommodate all the variables against its passage before it received the nod of the House of Representatives as PIGB in January this year. The House and Senate versions were harmonised on

Ronaldo Claims Almost 200,000 of the 346,915 Votes To Win 2018 UEFA Goal Of The Season Award

Ex Real Madrid star and Portugal forward, Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead kick for Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final clash with Juventus has been voted UEFA’s Goal of the Season for 2018.
Ronaldo’s effort in the first leg of the last-eight encounter in Turin helped Real to establish a 3-0 lead over Juventus.
They were to see that lead whittled away on home soil, but ultimately prevailed courtesy of another timely effort from a talismanic presence – with Ronaldo netting a dramatic penalty at the Santiago Bernabeu.
He would go on to help the Blancos conquer Europe for a third year in succession, landing him a fifth continental crown, while also finishing as the Champions League’s top scorer.
Ronaldo can now also boast a first UEFA Goal of the Season award, with his strike against Juve claiming almost 200,000 of the 346,915 votes cast on the official website of European football’s governing body.
That haul saw him finish well clear of Marseille star Dimitri Payet in second, with the Frenchman claiming the runner-up spot for his effort in a 5-2 Europa League win over RB Leipzig.
Third place went to Eva Navarro for her goal for Spain in their Women’s U17 EURO final victory against Germany.
Ronaldo is just the third player to scoop the top prize, which was first handed out in 2015.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi took the award in its first two seasons, before the baton was passed to Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic in 2017.
