Tax, Women, and Business: In Conversation with Bisi Williams

As part of our Democracy Day series, Stears Business Columnist, Stephanie Itimi held a conversation with Bisi Alabi Williams, a journalist and CEO of Lighthouse Options, an interior décor company that specialises in interior design and space managing business. She spoke on the peculiarities of doing business in Nigeria and the challenges that may stunt the nation’s development.

“How do you keep your head above the water? How do you survive as a business? We have seen hell here on this road. They won’t just allow us to do business.”
Surviving in Nigeria is hard, and doing business in the country is even harder. You bring your own infrastructure because electricity is unreliable. You are swamped by multiple taxes and revenue-hungry government agencies. Government policy is unpredictable, politics is chaotic, and the country always seems to be on the verge of separation or economic crisis. Somehow, Nigeria has normalised all these. Somehow, none of this has killed Nigerians’ enterprising spirit; SMEs contribute 50% of national output and 80% of total employment. Somehow, people still do business in Nigeria.
Bisi Alabi Williams worked as a journalist for 21 years and is well-versed in Nigeria’s idiosyncrasies.

Don’t contest against me in 2019, Buhari tell youths after signing Not Too Young To Run Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday advised Nigerian youths to postpone their presidential ambitions till after 2019. Buhari, who has declared his interest in seeking re-election during the 2019 elections, gave the advice shortly after signing Not-Too-Young-to-Run Bill into law at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He described the bill as a landmark law, noting that the bill showed that the youth can achieve anything they conceive if they work hard at it.
2019: Keep your ambitions till 2023, Buhari tells youths after signing NTYTR Bill
The new law lowers the constitutional age limits for aspirants to presidential and legislative positions in the country, as clamoured for by majority of young Nigerians.
It reduces the age qualification for the office of the President from 40 years to 30 years; House of Representatives from 30 to 25; and State House of Assembly from 30 to 25.
The signing took place at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa, in the presence of the NTYTR group of under-35 young Nigerians drawn from across the country, led by Mr. Samson Itodo.
In his remarks after signing the law, Buhari canvassed for additional amendment to reduce the age limits for aspiring governors and senators, which was proposed but not reflected in the final bill he had just signed into law.
He said the signing of the bill was not the end of the journey but the beginning of more work to be done to get younger persons into government.

Though the Miss Zimbabwe Trust has said it will not take any action on the 25-year-old Kachote after it emerged that her ex-boyfriend leaked the photos, there has been public outcry when the naked photos of the beauty queen made its way to social media, with many calling for her to be stripped of the crown as she does not possess the qualities of representing the country.
Responding to the outcry, Miss Zimbabwe Trust spokesperson, Tendai Chirau, said Kachote, who would represent Zimbabwe at the Miss World finals later this year, will not be dethroned over mere allegations of leaked nude photos but would do so if it is found out to be true.
The lady in the eye of the storm has, however, told a Zimbabwean tabloid, H-Metro, that she suspected the pictures would emerge but the incidence happened a long time ago.

EVERY year Nigerian governments at all levels spend  an average of N241.2 billion on security votes that are never accounted for, or subjected to public scrutiny, and “lacks legal or constitutional basis”,  the 2018 Transparency International  report has revealed.
The report, titled “Camouflage Cash: How security fuel corruption in Nigeria,” and published on Monday, puts key public officials across Nigeria’s three tiers of government at the centre of corruption, that involves the secret spending of security votes without accountability.
The global watchdog said the funds, known as “security votes”, are a relic of military rule, and has become “synonymous with official corruption and abuse of power”.
The funds, often provided in cash to the president, the state governors and the local government chairmen, are not subject to legislative oversight or independent audit, and therefore are disbursed at

Why young Nigerians want singer's Ye to replace the national anthem

PULSE-Nigeria.. If nothing, the requests for Burna's song to be our national anthem are proof that the Nigerian story has changed and we need to acknowledge that. (Burna Boy)

In 2018, it is hard to convince the average young person to "serve with heart and might", especially when internal security crises have made it obvious that we are not exactly "one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity".

When Burna Boy set out to make Ye, and the compendium of tracks that would become his third studio album/mixtape "Outside", he must have been hoping that the fans would enjoy his offering. He couldn't possibly have imagined that they would connect to the song so well that some would go as far as suggesting that it becomes Nigeria's new national anthem.

Yet that is exactly what is happening.
While Burna's critically acclaimed project has been a bit of a slow burner in some regards, the track

‘You’re Not Lazy’ — Jonathan Pays Tribute To Nigerian Youth On Democracy Day

Goodluck Jonathan, a former President of Nigeria, has re-emphasized that the Nigerian youth are not lazy.
To make this point, Jonathan celebrated Ukoma Michael, Princess Elizabeth Bright and Ramota Tele Lawal — exceptional Nigerians whose invention and hard work have placed Nigeria on the global map.
In his democracy day message to Nigerians, on Tuesday, Jonathan stated that investment in Nigeria’s young population will, in return, lead to development of the country.
“More than 50% of our population are youth. If we develop policies, programmes and projects to empower the youth of Nigeria, the Nigerian youth, who single handedly created Nollywood, the third largest movie industry in the world, can be expected to return the favour and make Nigeria proud,” he said.
“Nigerian youth are showcasing their brilliance around the world and I want to make special mention of Ukoma Michael, who at thirteen years of age invented a battery-operated fan that lasts for 19 hours on a full charge. This ingenuity domiciled in Michael should be encouraged by our leadership.

Nigerians have been commemorating May 29 annually since 1999.
Here's all Buhari said in a televised broadcast on May 29, 2018.
My Dear Nigerians! Today marks the 19th year of our nascent democracy and the 3rd Anniversary of this administration. I am thankful to Almighty God for bringing us thus far. This administration came at a time that Nigerians needed Change, the Change we promised and the Change we continue to deliver. We have faced a lot of challenges on this journey and Nigerians have stood by us in achieving the three cardinal points of this administration namely; Security, Corruption and the Economy.
The commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day is a celebration of freedom, a salute to the resilience and determination of Nigerians and a recommitment by Government to keep its promise to lead Nigeria into a new era of justice and prosperity.

Democracy Day: APC, SDP, NLC, Atiku congratulate Nigerians

Atiku Abubakar
Atiku Abubakar
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated Nigerians on the 2018 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the APC boasted of a stronger democracy and polity 19 years after returning to democratic rule.
It said Nigeria has conducted successive elections and has continually improved on the transparency and credibility of the electoral systems.
While stating that military rule is now distant memory in Nigeria, it called on Nigerians to work collectively to improve democracy “because regardless of its imperfections, democracy remains the best form of government that can best serve the interest of our people.”
It pledged commitment to address the country’s current challenges, which find expression in the economy and security. It also urged all Nigerians to continue to pray and support the current administration’s effort to build a peaceful and greater nation.
But the Social Democratic Party (SDP) disagrees with such optimism. It said 19 years of democratic rule should have called for “drum-beating and dancing, but Nigeria’s experience rather calls for finger-biting over failed expectations”.
It said Nigeria still wallows within the confines of a country with potentials for greatness, instead of living the reality of its potentials.
According to a statement by its National Secretary, Shehu Gabam, the SDP said the fight against

Democracy Day Speech: Buhari keeps mum on Leah Sharibu, Chibok girls still with Boko Haram

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday failed to comment on the status of his administration’s effort to rescue the Dapchi schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu, still in Boko Haram’s captivity.
Leah Sharibu and Buhari
He also did not speak on the status of the over 100 Chibok girls still with the Boko Haram over four years after they were kidnapped.

“Today, the capacity of the insurgents has been degraded leading to the re-establishment of authority of government and the release of captives including, happily, 106 Chibok and 104 Dapchi girls, and over 16,000 other persons held by the Boko Haram,” Mr Buhari said in his Democracy Day Speech.
The Buhari administration secured the release of about 106 of the Chibok girls kidnapped from their secondary school in Chibok, Borno State in April 2014 during the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The girls were released in negotiations with the sect. However, over 100 of the about 276 originally kidnapped are still believed to be with the terrorists.

Nigeria observes national mourning day for Benue victims

A national day of mourning has been declared in Nigeria on May 28, where people are calling for government intervention to end the violence between farmers and herders.

In Nigeria, a national day of mourning is being observed on Monday by the Joint Nigeria Crisis Action Committee and is being held the day before Nigeria's Democracy Day.
Hundreds have been killed in continuing violence between farmers and nomadic Fulani herdsmen since violence broke out in 2011 over shrinking resources.
Fighting between herdsmen and farmers escalated in January and the lives of 21 other people were also taken when a group attacked a church in April, as Catholics took to the streets calling for an end to the spiral of violence.
The people of Benue believe Fulani herdsmen are allegedly responsible for the attack and are calling for government intervention to put an end to the bloodshed.
TRT World's Wendy Agbo travelled to Benue state to find out more about this deadly conflict.

Herdsmen attack Catholic seminary, shoot reverend father, beat others

Two Catholic priests were on Monday morning beaten with one shot in the leg when gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked a minor seminary in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, the Punch reports.

He said, “Please Frs, pray for us. Our minor seminary in Jalingo has just been attacked by the Fulani, some students are injured, some cars destroyed, two priests beaten and one shot on the leg. They are currently receiving treatment at FMC.”
Speaking on the incident, Fr. Atsue claimed they were attacked because some security men in the Seminary have been challenging the decision of the herdsmen to graze right inside the premises.
In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, the rector narrated, “With permission from my Bishop, Most Rev. Charles Hammawa of Jalingo Diocese, I Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Atsue (the Rector) want to announce and inform Nigerians and the international community that our diocesan Sacred Heart Minor Seminary was attacked in the early hours of this 28/05/2018 at about 12:30am by sophisticated armed Fulani Herdsmen (at least we heard their conversation).

Ronaldo, Messi, Sergio Ramos, Salah Headline UEFA's Champions League Squad Of The Season

UEFA have announced their official squad of the 2017/18 Champions League campaign, and snubbed an African superstar as well as the one of this season's record-breakers.
A coaching panel, which included former Manchester United boss David Moyes, selected the 18-man squad of the season, but there was no space for Sadio Mane and James Milner.

Mane equalled Mohamed Salah's record as the African with most goals in a single Champions League campaign after scoring Liverpool's equaliser in Saturday's 3-1 final defeat to Real Madrid, his 10th UCL goal this season.
His teammate Milner broke the record for the most assists in a Champions League campaign, setting his colleagues up nine times in 2017/18, yet neither neither the Englishman nor Mane were named in the official UCL Team of the Season.
In fact, only three Liverpool stars made the selection, namely Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk and Salah. Meanwhile, the Reds' opponents in the final, Los Blancos, who lifted their third straight trophy, had eight players in the squad. In Cristiano Ronaldo, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos and Keylor Navas, eight of Zinedine Zidane's starting XI for

Retired U.S English Teacher Receives Letter From Trump, Corrects Mistakes And Sends It Back To White House

A retired secondary school English teacher has corrected a letter she received from US president Donald Trump and sent it back to the White House.
Yvonne Mason, who lives in Atlanta and was a teacher for 17 years, said the letter would have barely passed and corrected its numerous grammatical errors.
This included 11 examples of incorrect capitalisation of words such as “president” and “state”.
“If it had been written in middle school, I’d give it a C or C-plus. If it had been written in high school, I’d give it a D,” Ms Mason told South Carolina’s Greenville News.
She chose not to attach a grade to the corrected letter, which included Mr Trump’s signature, and posted back to the White House.
Ms Mason argued the note – which was a reply to a note she had written about the Valentine’s Day school shooting in Florida which left 17 dead – was “stylistically appalling”.
She acknowledged the letter was likely to have been penned by a staff member rather than the

Real had waited 12 years to win their 10th European crown, “La Decima”, a feat that had swelled with importance the longer the delay dragged on. Beating city rivals and La Liga champions Atletico, who themselves had reached their first final since 1974, added some extra spice but the match is perhaps best remembered for the arrival of Gareth Bale, in his first season at the club, both at the back post in extra-time to head Real in front and as a star at the club. It proved a knock-out blow for Atleti, who had come within a whisker of pulling off their dream upset, only for Sergio Ramos to head in an equaliser in the third minute of added time, cancelling out Diego Godin´s opener. After Bale´s intervention, Marcelo and a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo made sure of the triumph.

A 109-99 Game 6 victory made it six wins in the Cavs' past seven elimination games, and sets up LeBron James for a chance to go to his eighth consecutive Finals in Game 7 on Sunday in Boston. James added to his already historic postseason with a 46-point, 11-rebound, 9-assist outing Friday for his seventh 40-point game of the playoffs. It was the most he has scored in an elimination game and only three points shy of his playoff career high of 49. He played the game's first 35 minutes before resting, expending enormous energy to keep the Cavs alive.
He was especially aggressive in the first half, when he piled up 25 points to help Cleveland build a double-digit lead. Seventeen of those points came in the second quarter, when he made his first three 3-pointers of the game and attempted his first six free throws. James later finished the exquisite
