Don’t Send New Year Message To Nigerians, PDP Tells APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, admonished the  Federal Government not to bother sending New Year message to Nigerians on January 1, 2018.

PDP in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this is because the current administration led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not fulfilled any of the promises contained in previous New Years’ messages since its assumption of office.
It noted that it will be the height of callousness for the ruling party and the government to “spew another round of propaganda and false hope in the name of new year messages.”
According to the opposition party, though Nigerians are very patient people, they are “ tired of APC’s incompetence, lies and endless propaganda.”
The PDP said what Nigerians are eagerly waiting for is the farewell address of the APC administration in 2019.
The statement read: “ Every New Year, since 2016, the APC and its Federal Government have been reeling out heaps of promises which they had no intentions to fulfill. Now they are warming up to reel out fresh ones in January 2018.

“What is the need of a New Year message from APC Government when it would be replete with propaganda?  What is the need of their yearly assurances when the only thing we see is an arrogant and incompetent government plunging the nation into economic recession and visiting the citizens with the worst forms of untold hardship.”

Blame Passing, President Buhari’s New Year Gift To Nigerians, Says Soyinka

• Country Now Dysfunctional, Declares Nobel Laureate • APC Backs Govt Decision On Fuel Subsidy
• PDP Seeks Forensic Probe Of New Subsidy Regime • Opposition Says Ruling Party Not Equipped For Governance
Professor Wole Soyinka
As the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continue to bicker over the rationale for the covert restoration of fuel subsidy, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says he can only wish Nigerians less misery in the coming year.Soyinka stressed that prevailing socio-economic circumstances in the country make a genuine happy New Year greeting an extravagant wish, adding that 40 years after the country passed through the same problems associated with scarcity of fuel, the ugly development is still rife.
Making reference to a Daily Times publication of June 7, 1977, the laureate said, “The accompanying news clipping from June, 1977 came into my hands quite fortuitously. It is forty years old. It captures the unenviable enigma that is the Nigerian nation. It is however a masterful end-of-year image to take into the coming year, not only for the individual now at the helm of government, General Buhari, but for a people surely credited with the most astounding degree of patience and forbearance on the African continent – except of course among themselves, when they turn into predatory fiends. When many of us are blissfully departed, an updated rendition of this same clipping – with a change of cast here and there – will undoubtedly be reproduced in the media, with the same alibis, the same in-built panacea of blame passing.”
In a statement on the state of the nation, Soyinka continued: “Let this be called to our collective

Two Protesters Killed, Social Media Apps Blocked As Iranians Rally Against Economic Hardship

Iran on Sunday blocked access to Instagram and a popular messaging app used by activists to organize and publicize the protests now roiling the Islamic Republic, as authorities said two demonstrators had been killed overnight in the first deaths attributed to the rallies. The demonstrations, which began Thursday over the economic woes plaguing Iran and continued Sunday, appear to be the largest to strike the Islamic Republic since the protests that followed the country's disputed 2009 presidential election.
A wave of spontaneous protests over Iran's weak economy swept into Tehran on Saturday, with college students and others chanting against the government just hours after hard-liners held their own rally in support of the Islamic Republic's clerical establishment. (AP Photo)
They were fanned in part by messages sent on the Telegram messaging app, which authorities blocked Sunday along with the photo-sharing app Instagram, which is owned by tech giant Facebook.
Many in Iran are learning about the protests and sharing images of them through Telegram, a mobile phone messaging app popular among the country's 80 million people. On Saturday, Telegram shut down one channel on the service over Iranian allegations it encouraged violence, something its moderator denied.
On Sunday, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov wrote on Twitter that authorities had blocked access to the app.
"Iranian authorities are blocking access to Telegram for the majority of Iranians after our public refusal to shut down ... peacefully protesting channels," he wrote.
Iran's state TV news website, iribnews.ir, quoted an anonymous source saying that social media in Iran would be temporarily limited as a safety measure.
"With a decision by the Supreme National Security Council, activities of Telegram and Instagram are

Nigeria Loses N222 Billion In One Year In Shady Crude Oil Swap Deals— NEITI

Nigeria lost over $723 million (about N221.5 billion, at N306.3 to $1) through the Offshore Processing Arrangement, OPA adopted by the Federal Government in 2015 to supply refined petroleum products in the country, the latest Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI 2015 Oil & Gas Industry Audit Report, has revealed.

The controversial arrangement was introduced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation under the supervision of the then Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and was quite popular during the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
It was an arrangement that involved the allocation of Nigeria’s crude oil to select indigenous and foreign oil traders under agreed swap contract terms, in exchange for refined products for local consumption.
Considered an alternative arrangement for the country’s four dysfunctional refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna, the OPA was criticised by Nigerians as a channel for corruption and waste of the country’s crude oil resources.
Apart from the difficulty in getting commensurate value of petroleum products for the volume of crude oil allocated for refining, the arrangement was identified as one of the ways corrupt

Oil Price Inches Towards $70, 44% Above Benchmark- The Guardian

Crude oil price has risen by $20 per barrel above Nigeria’s benchmark of N45 a barrel in the 2018 proposed yearly budget. In the proposed N8.6 trillion ‘Budget of Consolidation’ presented by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly for approval, crude oil benchmark price was put at an average of N45 per barrel, based on low benchmark price of $35, medium ($45) and high ($55) scenarios, while production was set at 2.3 million barrels per day. At the close of Tuesday trading hour, global benchmark, Brent crude oil price was $65.25 a barrel, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) settle at $58.47 per barrel. What this means is that, at Nigeria’s production peg of 2.3 million proposed in the 2018 budget, the country will be making an excess crude oil earnings of $46 million per day (N16.5 billion), if crude oil price remain at $65 a barrel in 2018.
Brent crude oil has remained at above $60 a barrel level in the last few days, sparking talks that this could be the new floor under oil prices and that $70 a barrel oil in short term is now not only a producers’ wildest dreams, but a reality. This also shows that the crude oil production capping embarked upon by members and non-members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is yielding positive result.
For example, as of November 2017, the OPEC and participating non-OPEC producing countries

Football legend, George Weah, Set To become Liberia’s president

Dismissed as illiterate when he first contested in 2005, George Opong Weah could become Liberia’s 25th president. The only African to have won the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year, Weah looked set to beat his opponent, 72-year-old vice president, Joseph Boakai, clinching 12 of the 15 counties in the West African state. He has already claimed victory in a tweet saying: “It is with deep emotion that I want to thank you, the Liberian people, for honouring me with your vote today. It is a great hope. I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends and my loyal supporters, who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season. We are on the verge of making history for our people.”

The countries National Elections Commission (NEC) however is yet to make any official declaration on the outcome of the election. On its website yesterday, NEC said it would “on Thursday December 28 (today) begin the announcement of provisional results of the 2017 presidential runoff”.
If he is declared winner, he would take over from Nobel Peace Prize winner, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who defeated him in the 2005 election. With 60 per cent of the country’s population under the age of 30, Weah’s clout as a footballing icon appeared to have given him support among the youth.
Weah topped the first round of voting in October but failed to secure the 50 per cent needed for an outright win. The runoff was delayed twice following allegations of fraud and irregularities.
Born on October 1, 1966, he came into footballing prominence when he joined Cameroun’s Tonerre Kalala in 1988 and left for Europe after a CAF Champions Cup defeat at the hands of Nigeria’s Iwuanyanwu Nationale. In Europe, he was recruited by Monaco, with the then coach, Arsene Wenger,

The family of President Muhammadu Buhari is seriously considering flying their son abroad for advanced medical treatment, TheCable can report.

When TheCable visited the hospital on Wednesday evening, armed mobile policemen were seen guarding the place.

Yusuf sustained a head injury and broke a limb in the accident, which made him undergo a surgery.
In a statement on Wednesday, Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said the only son of the president is in a stable condition.
But a source told TheCable that Shehu’s statement was not very accurate.
“The statement did not reflect the true situation of things. The boy is in a critical condition. He has been in the intensive care unit,” the source told TheCable.
“Some doctors in the hospital were even scared to attend to him just in case anything went wrong. Imagine doctors being scared to perform their duty. He is the only son of the president.”
The source added that the president’s family were making plans to get an air ambulance that would convey Yusuf to a German hospital which Cedacrest has an affiliation with.
Cedacrest is said to be the only orthopaedic specialist hospital in Abuja.
The doctors have reportedly advised them not to fly Yusuf out at the moment, explaining that it is

Sleaze Hits $321m Abacha Loot Recovery As Malami Creates ‘Job For The Boys’

The celebrated imminent repatriation of $321 million stolen by Sani Abacha, former military ruler, has run into a storm with suspicious moves that may amount to “re-looting the loot” through the backdoor.
Abacha and Malami
The federal government had, between 2013 and 2014, used the services of Swiss lawyers, Enrico Monfrini and Christian Luscher, to recover the stolen funds from Liechtenstein and Luxembourg — and domiciled the monies with the attorney-general of Switzerland since then.
Nigeria also undertook to pay 4% of the recovered Luxemburg assets as professional fees and expenses to the lawyers, in addition to roughly $6.8 million in fees to be paid to Monfrini for the Liechtenstein recoveries.
With the fees settled, all that was left for the money to be returned to Nigeria, TheCable understands, was for Abubakar Malami, Nigeria’s attorney-general, to sign an MoU with the Swiss authorities and commit to an undertaking that the funds would be properly utilised.
Previous repatriations were reportedly mismanaged with no obvious benefits for the people of Nigeria, a development that stalled further return of recovered loot to the federal government.
However, in a suspicious move, Malami went ahead to engage two Nigerian lawyers to act on his

Of the 276, 163 are now free: 57 fled in the early days after their abduction, three escaped later, and a Swiss-coached mediation secured 103.
Twenty-one of the 103 were freed on October 13, 2016, while the remaining 82 were freed on May 6 this year.
In a detailed report on the incident, WSJ said while €1m was paid for the 21 first freed, additional €2m accompanied the five Boko Haram commanders that were exchanged with the next batch: the 82 girls.
TheCable had earlier reported how the €2m were reportedly paid.
Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known to have links with the sect, and Zannah Mustapha, a lawyer, were said to be key mediators involved in both deals.
After months of talks involving Salkida and Mustapha, a breakthrough was finally reached when in late 2016, both parties agreed on a plan concerning the girls’ freedom.
WSJ said: “The plan called for two exchanges. In the first one, Boko Haram would free 20 Chibok hostages in exchange for €1m.
“If both sides were satisfied with the outcome, the rest of the girls who wanted to come home would

Fuel Scarcity Can't Stop Us From Airing Buhari's Documentary- Femi Adesina

Femi Adesina,  spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari, has defended the decision of the presidency to release a documentary on his principal at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling to get fuel.Femi Adesina: Why should fuel scarcity stop us from airing documentary on Buhari? Some Nigerians have faulted the timing of the documentary, saying focus should be on the resolving the fuel crisis.
But Adesina, who disagreed asked: “Should we then be perpetually like King Lear at his worst, and consign ourselves to the doldrums occasioned by fuel scarcity at a festive period?”
He said the government is doing its best to solve the fuel crisis which he blamed on “deliberate mischief and sabotage by some marketers, who want to force the hands of government to increase the pump price”.
Here is a statement issued by Adesina on Sunday:
I have read a lot of reactions, particularly online, on the timing of the airing of the documentary on President Muhammadu Buhari, slated for December 24 and 25, 2017, respectively, by 8 p.m on NTA and Channels Television.
Some of the comments are borne out of genuine concern, which we appreciate, while others are virulent, coming from inveterate complainers. Fault finding is the stock-in-trade of such people, and

The yuletide is usually a period associated with merriment and fun memories, when families get together to bond and dance away their sorrows during the holiday. But reverse seems to be the case this period, with tales of woes and lamentations across the federation as workers, retirees, artisans, travelers, unemployed graduates and a host of others groan in hardship under a condition that has left many distressed, even as the fuel scarcity continues to bite harder, leaving commuters to their fate. More Than Four Million Nigerians Lost Their Bobs This Year(2017) –NBS

Between January and September this year, 4.07 million Nigerians became unemployed, an analysis of the unemployment report for the third quarter released by the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed.

The bureau, in the report made available to our correspondent on Friday, stated that the number of Nigerians that became unemployed rose from 11.92 million in the first quarter of this year to 13.58 million and 15.99 million in the second and third quarters respectively.
It said between the second quarter and third quarter, the number of economically active or working age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased from 110.3 million to 111.1 million.
The NBS report said the increasing unemployment and underemployment rates implied that although Nigeria’s economy was officially out of recession, domestic labour market was still fragile and economic growths in the past two quarters in 2017 had not been strong enough to provide employment in Nigeria’s domestic labour market.
It read in part, “The labour force population increased from 83.9 million in Q2 2017 to 85.1 million in Q3 2017. The total number of people in full-time employment (at least 40 hours a week) declined from 52.7 million in Q2 2017 to 51.1 million in Q3 2017.

Nigeria, Others Delivered A Stinging Rebuke To Trump Jerusalem Move

Trump said he’d cut aid to countries who criticized the US at the UN. They did it anyway.

In a stinging rebuke of President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel earlier this month, 128 countries including Nigeria, and some of the US’s most trusted and reliable allies, voted in favor of a United Nations resolution on Thursday calling for a reversal of his position. Only nine countries voted against it.
Though the resolution doesn’t explicitly refer to the US, it’s clearly directed at the White House. The measure declares that any changes to the status of Jerusalem “have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded.”
Nikki Haley threatened that the US would cut off funding to the UN over the resolution, but the world voted for it overwhelmingly anyway.
Spencer Platt/Getty Images
It also “calls upon all States to refrain from the establishment of diplomatic missions in the Holy City of Jerusalem” — another shot at the administration, which announced plans to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The closest thing the US got to support from allies was 35 abstentions. Friends of the US like Canada, Mexico, and Australia refrained from voting on the resolution — which means that while they didn’t support the US with a vote against it, they didn’t criticize the US either with a vote in favor of it.
While the passage of the resolution isn’t binding — meaning the US doesn’t actually have to reverse

Hijab: I am ready to fight to the end – Firdaus Amasa, UNILORIN Law graduate

A Nigerian Law School graduate denied access to the venue of the call to bar ceremony recently, Miss Firdaus Amasa, has revealed that she was prepared to fight the battle until she gets justice.
She said her demand remains the need to grant approval for the use of hijab among Muslim law graduates.
Firdaus Amasa, a graduate of the University of Ilorin, had been denied access to the ceremony after insisting on wearing hijab during the ceremony.
She was specifically refused entry into the hall for insisting to wear the wig on top of her hijab–a headscarf.
The case has attracted significant attention on social media, with Nigerians divided on her decision and that of the authorities of the law school.
Amasa while speaking on Saturday maintained that she remained resolute in her convictions to set a precedent for Hijab-wearing Muslims during the ceremony.
She said, “My major concern is the approval of Hijab so that every person coming behind me will be able to use it for the call to bar (ceremony)”.
When asked whether she was aware of rules and regulations against the use of Hijab at the ceremony, she said there was none, stressing that it was merely based on conventions.
“There is nothing like that (laws preventing the use of Hijab)”.
“When you ask them too, they tell you it is convention; that that is how it is done and it has to remain

When They Think Convering Head To Toe Is Righteousness

This was the daughter of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She is a member of the first family. Her father as we all know is a devout Muslim who at one point advocated the application of Sharia throughout the country.

Look at how she dressed during her Call to Bar not long ago. She complied strictly with the code of dressing prescribed by the Rules and the Body of Benchers.
She is also a Muslim.
You cannot quote the Quran to justify the violation of secular laws of a secular institution in a secular country. The Quran, The Bible, Seven Book of Moses and other holy books should never be used to justify lawlessness or invalidate national laws.
The Legal Profession in Nigerian is not governed by any religious book. I guess this may not be the case in Saudi Arabia and Israel. But when you choose to be a Nigerian lawyer, you must abide by the Rules here.

Kaka: Former Milan, Real Madrid and Brazil Player Retires From Football At 35

Kaká has been linked with return to Milan in off-field capacity
Brazilian won 2007 Champions League and 2002 World Cup

Kaka and Real Madrid President Florentino Perez-real
Kaká, the former Milan and Real Madrid midfielder, announced on Sunday that he is retiring from football.
The 35-year-old Brazilian announced his retirement on Twitter. “It was much more than I could ever imagined. Thank you!” he said. “I’m now ready for the next journey. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Kaká announced this year that he would not extend his contract with Orlando City but opened the door to a possible return to Milan, the club where he made his name.

“I would like to participate in the club in another way, as a manager, a sporting director, as someone who is between the pitch and the club,” he said in a farewell interview with Globo TV in Brazil. “I prepared very hard to be a professional footballer and I want to prepare for this new role.”
Kaká said Milan, with whom he won the Champions League in 2007, had offered him a role but did not specify the exact nature of the job or say if he would accept it.
Milan and his first team, São Paulo, both offered him a playing contract to extend his career but Kaká, who was in Brazil’s World Cup-winning squad in 2002, said the time was right to call it a day.
The Brazilian joined Milan in 2003 and stayed for six years before joining Real Madrid for a then-

Thief, Thief, Thief!!!!: Yaba College of Technology: Plethora of graft trails Rector, staff

Sheltered in the heart of Lagos mainland, its sultry environment belies the rot within. But this has not always been so.
Established in 1947, Yaba College of Technology is Nigeria’s pioneer higher educational institution. The institution, rather than attract fame for educational achievements, is currently embroiled in different corruption allegations.
The school has been rocked by financial misappropriation, maladministration, insider dealings in contract awards, contract splitting and kickbacks, among others.
Unfortunately, the name of the outgoing Rector, Dr. (Mrs) Margaret Kudirat Ladipo keeps popping up in every finding of questionable actions of financial activities.
Also questionable is the seeming inability of the bodies with supervisory powers over the Rector and the institution, namely the school’s Governing Council and the Ministry of Education, to address the severe rot within the citadel of learning, even after a panel of investigation set up by the Ministry of Education found the leadership led by Ladipo wanting in the discharge of its responsibilities.
Rather, those who have dared to speak out against what they felt was improper have found themselves at the receiving end of the whipping stick.
The Adamu Adamu intervention
In December 2015, based on several petitions and complaints against the management of the YabaTech, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, instructed the Director, Tertiary Education Department, Mrs. Hindatu Umar Abdullahi to set up an Ad-Hoc Committee to investigate the allegations contained in the petitions.
The six-man committee had Prof. Idowu Awopetu as chairman, and O.P. Oshiba served as the

Court declares PDP candidate, Obiora Okonkwo as Anambra Central Senator

On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja, declared Obiora Okonkwo as the Senator representing Anambra Central senatorial district.
At its sitting, the court ordered the immediate return of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate.
Ever since the election tribunal sacked Uche Ekwunife who was sworn in as Anambra Central Senator in 2015, the seat has remained vacant.
The presiding judge, John Tsoho, delivered the ruling following the withdrawal of arguments against the plaintiff by other counsels involved in the case.
Tsoho said he was prompted to grant the plaintiff’s request, as there were no pending objections from the defendants.
The defendants include Ekwunife, the PDP; Adamu Muazu, its former chairman, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Recall that three weeks ago, INEC fixed January 13 as date for a rerun election for the senatorial district.

How Tinubu, inside his bedroom, asked Dogara to step down for Gbajabiamila

The intense politicking that went into the election of Yakubu Dogara as the speaker of the house of representatives in 2015 has been detailed in his biography by Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu.
EXCLUSIVE: How Tinubu, inside his bedroom, asked Dogara to step down for Gbajabiamila
In the book, ‘A Reed Made Flint’, Dogara narrates how he came against all odds to win the nation’s No. 4 position, including surmounting a fierce opposition from Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who wanted Femi Gbajabiamila on the seat.
The book, made available to only TheCable, is due for public presentation on December 26, 2017 to mark the 50th birthday of the speaker.
Gbajabiamila had been endorsed by APC for the speakership but Dogara, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2014, decided to give it a shot.
Dogara recounted: “As a matter of fact, Asiwaju (Tinubu) is someone that we respect very much and no one can doubt the sterling role he played in the emergence of APC as a government. Asiwaju had through emissaries sought audience with me and in deference to him I went to see him along with a colleague, then Right Honourable Kawu Sumaila. When we got to the Asiwaju, seasoned politician that he was, he asked us to come to his bedroom. We held this meeting in his bedroom!
“He appealed to us and said what he only wanted, as a leader, as a political father, was for us to please collapse our campaign into Femi’s and declare our support for him. Asiwaju maintained that,
